Terrariums are more commonly known to be small, sometimes big, glass enclosures filled with plants, stones and mosses.

But this one is a floating, green sanctuary.

The two-guest property is completely eco-friendly, with solar panels, a compost toilet and filtered canal water.

The idea of a life-size terrarium was brought to life by Mia Powell, 30.

An executive producer from London, she won a global design competition from Airbnb in 2022 and used the funds to create the amazing space.

Once the shell was built Mia, with the help of family and friends, set to designing and building the interior. Her green dream was completed in February 2024.

“There’s a serenity to canal and water life,” Mia told Luxury Boat News.

“Sometimes I just sit on the back deck and take in the nature.

“Watching baby coots grow and feeding them strawberries takes you out of feeling like you’re in the middle of the city, it’s really calming.”

Mia wanted her project to be eco-conscious from the get-go.

She said: “I was keen to create an environment for guests who wanted a twist on a city escape.

“I loved the idea of creating something self-sufficient and terrariums were a big inspiration for that.

“Keeping 150-plus plants alive while finishing the place was a challenge, but I have a routine with them now, and they’re thriving.

“What isn’t there to love about plants?

“I grew up outside the city and love being in nature. It just makes you slow down, plants are very calming.”

Next, she wants to move on to a house project.

She added: “I love my boat, but I’m actually really excited to move on to a bricks-and-mortar renovation next.

“I’m keen to make sure it’s another unique, eco-conscious space and am currently on the lookout for my next big project.”It costs £250 a night to stay at the terrarium.
